Introducing Power Mac G5, Mac OS X Panther, iChat AV and iSight, Safari 1.0 and Xcode.
Power Mac G5 is built around the 64-bit PowerPC G5, up to dual 2 GHz, in an anodized aluminum enclosure with four thermal zones. It adds FireWire 800, USB 2.0 and PCI-X, starting at $1,999.
Designed by IBM and Apple, the PowerPC G5 is the first 64-bit desktop processor and runs 32-bit apps natively. It reaches up to 2 GHz, with 58 million transistors built on a 130-nanometer process.
Mac OS X “Panther” is previewed with a redesigned Finder, Exposé, iChat AV, FileVault and Fast User Switching. It is slated to ship by the end of 2003 for $129.
Panther Server adds Open Directory 2, Samba 3 for Windows clients, a rebuilt mail server and a new VPN server. It is slated for the end of 2003, from $499 for a 10-client edition.
iChat AV brings video and audio conferencing to the Mac over broadband, with audio even over dial-up. It launches as a free public beta for Jaguar and becomes part of Panther.
iSight is a FireWire video camera for video conferencing with a built-in noise-suppressing microphone. One cable carries audio, video and power; it is available the same day for $149.
Safari leaves beta after nearly five million downloads, with built-in Google search, SnapBack, tabbed browsing and pop-up blocking. It is free and becomes the default browser on new Macs.
Xcode is a new set of developer tools for Mac OS X with Fix and Continue, Zero Link and Distributed Build. Apple says it is five times faster than its previous tools.
